Haye Touches Down In Germany

Monday, 02 November 2009 19:50
English boxer David Haye has arrived in Germany for his heavyweight world title fight against WBA Champion Nikolai Valuev on Saturday.

The British boxer will attempt to floor his opponent for the first time in his 16-year career. Valuev, at 7ft 2in, will take on Haye this weekend in Nuremberg.

Haye's trainer Adam Booth has promised the Briton will go for a knockout. "David always looks to try to knock someone out. This is going to be no different, it's a strategy we employ to go about landing shots."

29-year-old Haye is 23 centimetres shorter and nearly 40 kilos lighter than Valuev in what many describe it as a "David versus Goliath" contest.

The common consensus is that Haye's only chance of victory is to utilise his speed advantage to out-box Valuev.

The boxer from London has been sparring with his trainer who has been wearing 15cm-high boots to prepare for the height disadvantage Haye will face.

But Valuev is equally defiant about his chances of winning the fight. "I am in great shape and I will take home my title with me," the Russian said.

Haye is favourite to beat Valuev and is 28/1 to win the fight and win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
