'Shocking' Victory In Melbourne Cup

Tuesday, 03 November 2009 11:10
Australia's biggest horse race was won by home based entry 'Shocking' at Flemington Racecourse.

The 10 to 1 shot trained by Mark Kavanagh and ridden by jockey Corey Brown stormed home in the closing stages to pip the Irish entry Crime Scene on the line.

Brown admitted his win on Shocking was made even more special after losing out by just a nose on board 'Bauer' last year.

He said: "I've had a fair few hiccups in my racing career. Three years ago, I ran into a bit of trouble in Hong Kong (when suspended for six months for testing
positive to cocaine) and I was told I would never get back to the heights that I did, but to come here today to win the Cup has proven them all wrong."

Trainer Kavangh put victory down to great preparation: "He was laying in his races because he was tired, because he was fat inside and he wasn't ready yet. Shocking's a stallion and he takes a bit of racing to come right and we knew Saturday (when he won the Lexus Chase) would top him off."
