Record GCSE Results Again
It has been another record-breaking year for GCSE results across the country.
Two thirds of pupils have gained at least one grade C this year, and the numbers of A and A* grades have gone up by nearly 1 percent.
Boys are closing the gap on girls - and they are actually outperforming the ladies in maths for the first time in 12 years. It is thought that reflects the removal of coursework - which girls tend to do better at.
At John Bunyan Upper School in Bedford, they've been celebrating massive improvements this year. The number of pupils getting grades A* to C has more than doubled to over 70%. The school is to become the Bedford Academy in September 2010.

"What the current regime will leave is an extremely healthy school", said headteacher Ursula Byrne. "A school that the new principal can really build on and make standards even better.
"Qualifications are an imperative for all our students to make sure they become valuable, global citizens who can join a modern workforce. We need people to be independent, cultured, civilised. So qualifications are critical.
As for the other schools in Bedford, St Thomas More have smashed all their existing records. At GCSE, 68% of all students gained 5 A*-C grades. Amongst the most outstanding performances were Annah Mason (10 A* and 1 A grade) and Kayleigh Doherty (8 A* and 3 A grades)
A delighted Dr Alan Lee, Head Teacher said: “The results are well-deserved – everyone has worked so hard. Despite the variable weather, it is turning into a fantastic summer for St Thomas More, last week the school gained the International School Award and this week our multi-million pound Sports Centre and Performing Arts Auditorium are due to be completed. We are blessed and grateful. St Thomas More is a very special place.
At Hastingbury’s 5 A* – C results were up by 11% on last year and the overall pass rate was 93% achieving 5 A*– G grades. Their star students were Raj Valaiyapathi who received 12.5 A*-C including 9.5 A*s, Hannah Hurley who received 12.5 A*-C including 8 A*s and Stephanie Wiggins who received 13.5 A*-C including 9 A’s. Their top boy student was James Cook, who celebrated obtaining 11.5 A*-C including 7 A*s.
Mark Rutherford has continued its improvement with its best results ever this year; 67% of students achieved 5 A*s – C grades with 48% achieving 5 A*s – C grades including English and Maths.
Steve Peacey, Head Teacher said: “Over the last three years our GCSE results have seen rapid improvement. We are pleased that all the hard work from staff and students has paid off. Our results keep getting better year on year.”
Biddenham received an 55.5% pass rate A* – C and 38% received 5 A* – C including English and Maths.
Sharnbrook received an 83% A* – C pass rate and 70% 5 A* – C including English and Maths.
John Clemence, Head Teacher said: “It’s been an excellent result, our A* – C is up again and particularly pleasing, is the number of A*’s we have achieved.”
Wootton Upper received a 76% A* – C pass rate with 60% 5 A* – C including English and Maths.
