7 Year Old's Rare Condition

A severely ill seven year old boy from Hitchin is helping to raise awareness of a very rare medical condition.

Kai Hammond suffers from tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), which is a genetic condition that has plagued his life since birth.  With TSC tumours can grow anywhere in the body, causing problems like epilepsy, learning difficulties and disability.  Sadly Kai has been severely affected by TSC and has had to endure several major brain operations.

In recent months, following yet more surgery and a change in his epiliepsy medication Kai's family have noticed a distinct difference in his health with epileptic seizures reducing from up to 18 a day to only three in as many months.

The family are now keen to join in with the national Tuberous Sclerosis Awareness Month to raise awareness and funds for other people with this devastating condition.

Kai attends Greenside Special School in Stevenage.  Hi mother Vicky said: "Right now we are celebrating Kai's progress.  For us the fact that Kai now tells us he is thirsty by picking up his empty cup is a major triumph!  Because of the support we've received from the Tuberous Sclerosis Association and the geniune hope for the future which their research is bringing, we want to encourage local people to support this incredibly worthwhile charity which really helps children like Kai."
