School review ordered

A review has been ordered into secondary schools in St Neots.

Cambridgeshire County Council claim an estimated 1,300 new homes are due to be built  in the town on land east of the railway to the south of the Love's Farm development, with a further 1,700 planned in the longer term. That means they could need up to 900 extra school places by 2016.

Any changes are likely to affect the existing secondary schools in the town: Longsands College and St Neots Community College (pictured). However, the latter has recently been placed into special measures and is also a 'National Challenge school' due to the low percentage of students achieving 5 or more A* - C grades at GCSE.

Three options to increase the number of secondary school places are being considered:

- To establish a new secondary school in the area identified for development east of the railway line
- To establish a new secondary school in the western area of the town
- To increase capacity in the two existing secondary schools - most of which would be at St Neots Community College in view of it currently being the smaller of the two

There is also a series of public meetings planned. They are:

9th November, 7.30pm at St Neots Community College
11th November, 7.30pm at Longsands College
23rd November, 4-8pm at Winhills Primary School
25th November, 4-8pm at Great Staughton Primary School
26th November, 4-8pm at Little Paxton Primary School
